Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is a 5 day festival, celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists which falls between October and November each year. Each day has a different meaning and this year, the main date of celebration is Sunday 12 November. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which means "rows of lighted lamps". Homes and communities are decorated with small oil lamps called Diyas, with the light supposed to help Lakshmi - goddess of wealth and good fortune - find her way into people's homes. Communities worldwide take part in Diwali. The city of Leicester, in the UK, has one of the biggest celebrations outside India with everything from dance to fireworks, food and fashion. Happy Diwali to all of our customers! |
