WHAT DOES YOUR COLONY NEED?
Autumn feeding is all about making sure your bees have the stores and nutrition they need heading into winter. As temperatures fall and natural forage becomes scarce across the UK, colonies that are light on stores may need supplementary feeding.
Syrup can be used while conditions remain warm enough for bees to take it down and process it, helping build valuable winter reserves, while fondant becomes a useful option as colder weather arrives.
Protein is worth considering too, particularly where pollen availability is poor or colonies are still rearing brood. A protein patty can supplement natural pollen and provide protein, amino acids and other nutrients needed for brood rearing and the development of healthy young bees.
Every colony is different, so checking stores, colony strength and available pollen now will help you decide whether carbohydrate feed, additional protein, or both are appropriate.
