Ask a group of beekeepers which foundation they prefer and you’ll rarely get one answer.
Some wouldn’t use anything but wax. Others value the strength, stability and convenience of plastic. Both have genuine advantages, and the right choice depends on your bees, your equipment and the way you work.
So, which one belongs in your hive?
Wax foundation is the traditional choice. It gives the bees a sheet of embossed beeswax on which to build their comb, helping to guide them towards straight, evenly spaced cells.
Plastic foundation is not intended to be a single-use item. Good-quality plastic foundation provides a permanent cell base that can remain in service for many years when it is used and maintained correctly.
